A HAPPY ENDING

Plantation, Florida: Last week police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery: The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, Florida, Subway shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and he works out every day. Mr.. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night.

According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner, Mr. Lovell, who was finishing his meal. After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money, but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened fire. He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head.

When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop, K-9 Units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business. They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department. Both men were taken to the Broward General Medical Center , where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition.

A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. The friend said, ''He'd give you the shirt off his back, but he'd be mad as hell if someone tried to take the shirt off his back.''  Mr. Lovell was a pilot in the Marine Corps, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta Airlines.

He is not expected to be charged authorities said. ''He was in fear for his life,'' Detective Rettig said, "These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots." Yes, idiots who took on a 71 year old Marine. Two head shots and one center body mass shot. Ah, Marine Corps Marksmanship, it simply can't be beat. One thing that the enemies of the Marines have learned LONG AGO and that is, DO NOT get between a Marine and his chow! haha.

BTW libs, Florida law allows eligible citizens to carry a concealed weapon and it is for JUST this type of situation.

Don't you just love a story with a happy ending?

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!” Eleanor Roosevelt.

  1. Welcome to Florida: Home of the no-flee Castle doctrine. A state where criminals can be shot by citizens and the cops only comment on your accuracy!

  2. Jim,

INDEED! Too bad one lived. I was hoping, as I read it, that he double-tapped them both. That was, medical costs, trial costs, and prison costs would be eliminated.

  4. thanks Gunny,

great story. does my heart good to see the end results. thank you Mr Lovell. if more people in your situation reacted as you did, we would save billions each year.

maybe we should make it a requirement to citizenship to go thru the CMP> civilian marksmanship program!

  8. usmcpgw,

OF COURSE NOT! That would validate our position and the Lapdog Media cannot do that.

  9. The 2 fools put the old man "in fear of his life". That is automatic justification for the use of "deadly force" in most jurisdictions.

Did anyone send this to NRA's Armed Citizen" column?

  13. You have the Eleanor quote wrong.
I believe that quote was about Sailors.
As for the Marines, she said,

"Marines are our underpaid, over sexed hired teenage killers."

    Or something to that effect.
    Anyway, good for Mr. Lovell.

  14. Gunny, that's why I carry 1911 A1, don't leave home without it.

Packy, in Florida you no longer have to attempt to flea. He could have shot them just for the danger created by the armed robbery and he wouldn't have been touched.

There would be no recent mention of this story because it took place almost 3 years ago. At the time there was a great hue and cry from the lead catchers' families that Lovell was acting as some kind of vigilante.
I wrote about this back in 2008 on Townhall - republished on Blogspot at:

No sympathy for either of those turds from this old sailor.
